129,000 Afghans Apply for Asylum in EU in 2022

Nearly 1 million people applied for international protection in the European Union in 2022, according to data published Wednesday, bringing the number of asylum requests to a level not seen since the refugee crisis of 2015-2016.

Associate Press (AP) reported, of that number 129,000 Afghans applied for international protection in the European Union.

“After more than a decade of war and economic collapse in their country, Syrians continued to be the top nationality of asylum-seekers in Europe with more than 130,000 applications. They were followed closely by Afghans fleeing the spiraling security, humanitarian and financial troubles that followed the Taliban takeover in August 2021, with 129,000 requests,” AP reports.

Meanwhile, some residents of Kabul asked the Islamic Emirate to provide employment for youth so they do not leave the country.

"There are smugglers on the way who sell passengers, as well as thieves. People are leaving the country and travel to Iran because of challenges here in the country,” Kabul resident Hasibullah said.

"We ask the Islamic Emirate to create job opportunities, to create businesses, so that the young people return to their homeland and make their homeland prosperous,” said Abdul Moumen, a resident of Kabul.

According to some asylum seeker rights activists, restrictions imposed by the caretaker government, and economic challenges are among the reasons for the increase in the asylum seeker numbers of Afghan citizens in other countries.

"The main reason for this sort of migration is the high restrictions on women in terms of education and employment, as well as the economic, cultural, social, political, and security infrastructures,” said Asifa Stanekzai, an asylum seeker rights activist.

Previously, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation reported that there are nearly 7 million Afghan migrants living abroad.
