Delegation Leaves for Tehran to Address Issue of Imprisoned Refugees

An Islamic Emirate delegation led by Shamsuddin Shariati, attorney general, left Kabul for Iran to assess the situation of Afghan refugees and to facilitate their return to Afghanistan.

The Islamic Emirate spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said that hundreds of Afghan inmates are imprisoned in Iran and the Islamic Emirate is trying to facilitate their release.

“The Islamic Emirate wants all Afghans to not remain in prison in any country. A delegation led by the attorney general has traveled to Iran to solve these problems,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Afghan refugees in Iran said that the Afghan refugees in the country are in critical condition.

“Based on the available information, around 600 Afghans are imprisoned on charges of various types of accusations. It is natural that when it is a foreign country and you are in prison, the situation of the Afghans is already bad,” said Ataullah Khogianai, an Afghan refugee in Iran.

“Many Afghans who are in prisons in Iran, they are now happy with the investigation of the Afghan delegation,” said Moeen Stanikzai, an Afghan refugee.

This comes as the Afghan refugee-supporting community in Iran said that many Afghans who arrived in Iran after the collapse of the former government are in poor condition.

“After the changes in Afghanistan, Afghans migrated in many countries. Some of them arrived in Iran who now are facing various types of problems,” said Asifa Stanikzai, head of the community.

Earlier, the Afghan embassy in Pakistan voiced concerns over the detention of Afghan refugees in the country’s prisons, saying that nearly 2,000 Afghan refugees are in prisons of Pakistan.
