Afghan Refugees With Poor Health in Pakistan Prisons: Afghan Consul

The consul of the Islamic Emirate in Karachi, Pakistan said that many Afghan refugees who are suffering from illnesses are in Karachi prison.

The Afghan consul in Karachi, Abdul Jabar Takhari, said an Afghan refugee named Faiz Mohammad has died from illness in a Karachi prison.

He called on Pakistan to release the Afghan refugees.

“I told the Ministry of Interior of Pakistan that he (the individual who died) came here for treatment and is in a critical condition. But it has not paid any attention. Prior to this, three people have died,” Takhari said.

The Afghan refugees in Pakistan prisons include women and children as well as elders. Takhari criticized the treatment of Pakistan towards the Afghan refugees, saying that four Afghans have died in prison over the past four months.

“He might have cancer, heart disease or kidney disease. They throw him/her who in such a critical condition into the prison and make him suffer and do not even allow him/her to take treatment, this is a big oppression,” Takhari said.

The Afghan refugees in Pakistan also complained about the mistreatment of the country’s police.

This comes as earlier a delegation of the Islamic Emirate led by the Attorney General left Kabul for Tehran to assess the situation of the Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

"Many of them (Afghan refugees) whose families are not here are facing dire challenges. They don’t have enough money to hire a lawyer to pursue their cases,” said Asifa Stanikzai, a human rights defender.

According to Takhari, 750 Afghan refugees are in prison in Pakistan and many of them have serious health conditions.
