Death Toll at 62 in Italy Migrant Tragedy, Dozens Missing

The death toll from Sunday's migrant-boat disaster off the coast of Calabria climbed to 62 on Monday when rescuers recovered the bodies of three more people.

According to ANSA news agency report, many of the people on board were asylum seekers from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Syria.

The report added it is estimated that dozens of people are missing and feared dead after a boat thought to have been carrying between 180 and 250 asylum seekers broke up in rough waters off the beach of Steccato di Cutro, near the southern city of Crotone.

Sources told ANSA that three people suspected of being traffickers have been detained by the Italian authorities in relation to the disaster, including at least one Turkish national.

Germany in Afghanistan on Twitter called illegal immigration terrible and said that it can be prevented by respecting civil liberties and human rights.

“After the recent tragedy in Bulgaria with 18 Afghan illegal migrants who died under horrible circumstances, another humanitarian disaster occurred in Italy, involving Afghans in a capsized boat run by criminal human traffickers. Illegal migration carries horrible and often lethal risks. Its root causes must be fought with all possible means, including by creating an open, fair, and just society and respecting basic civil liberties and human rights,” Germany in Afghanistan tweeted.

Meanwhile some citizens of the country consider unemployment in the country the main reason for migration to neighboring and European countries.

"Because the economic situation of my family was not good, I decided to go to Iran to find something, that's why I left home,” said Khair Mohammad, a resident of Kabul.

"Here people are living in poverty. I have a bachelor's degree. Due to the challenges here, I’m forced to go to Iran,” said Farhad, an Afghan who wants to go to Iran.

Some experts on the affairs of immigrants asked the Islamic Emirate to provide job opportunities to the country's citizens.

"Many businesses in the nation are closed. A lot of factories are closed. We have a lot of challenges in the country. Youth are traveling overseas because of these issues,” said Aftab Ahmad Khan Ahmadzai, an expert on immigration issues.

"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan should provide opportunities for education and employment so that people do not leave their homeland, and also it can be observed that Afghans are suffering numerous challenges in many neighboring nations and European countries,” said Ahmad Khan Ander, a political analyst.

Based on the report, many of the confirmed victims of the disaster are women and children, and around 80 people survived.

According to the figures of the Italian Ministry of Interior, nearly 150,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea in 2022, and several ships carrying refugees have also sunk.
