The UN Security Council unanimously adopted two resolutions concerning the situation in Afghanistan—the first resolution was the renewal of the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the second resolution requests that the Secretary-General conduct an independent assessment that provides recommendations for an integrated and coherent approach among different actors in the international community in order to address the current challenges facing Afghanistan.

The meeting was hosted by the UAE and Japan, who authored the two draft texts of the resolutions.

Speaking at the meeting, the UAE envoy to the UN Lana Zaki Nusseibeh said:

“Today, the Security Council unanimously adopted two resolutions concerning the situation in Afghanistan. The first extends the robust mandate of UNAMA for another 12 months and an unequivocal show of support for the mission and the leadership of SRSG (Roz) Otunbayeva at a time when the Afghan people are facing a set of profoundly difficult challenges, the council has responded with a strong and unified message. Afghanistan and in particular its women and its girls will not be abandoned.”

The meeting also adopted a second resolution which calls on the UN Secretary-General conduct an independent assessment that provides recommendations for an integrated and coherent approach to the Afghan situation among different actors in the international community.

“I would like to express our deep appreciation for the constructive and valuable engagement by council members on the proposal requesting an independent assessment of the international approach to Afghanistan,” the UAE ambassador said.

The Japanese ambassador to the UN, Kimihiro Ishikane, told a meeting of the UN on Afghanistan:

“Afghanistan faces enormous challenges ... humanitarian and economic situation is compounded by the Taliban’s decision that deny opportunities for education, employment and freedom to women and girls. The threat of terrorism persists. All of these have a devasting impact on the people of Afghanistan.”

“Today’s unanimous decision to renew UNAMA’s robust mandate sends a clear message that the international community will not abandon women and girls,” said the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.

“The work of the mission in protecting, promoting and monitoring the rights of all Afghans, including advocating for inclusive and representative governance is more important than ever,” the UK statement said.

The US ambassador Robert Wood said that the Council has acted to preserve UNAMA as a lifeline for the people of Afghanistan.

"The United States fully supports UNAMA, and its mission and we are proud to support a one-year extension of UNAMA’s mandate," he added.

“It is more important than ever that UNAMA emphasize this work,” he said. “UNAMA will also continue to address a widespread humanitarian emergency and economic crisis, promote peace and stability, and facilitate dialogue among all relevant Afghan political actors and stakeholders.”
