Gallup Poll Indicates Muslim-Majority Countries Doubt US Motives

Majorities of those surveyed in 11 of 13 Muslim countries surveyed by Gallup were skeptical about whether the US is serious about encouraging the establishment of democratic systems, and all 13 countries had the highest number disagreeing with this statement.

“In addition to asking whether the US is serious about encouraging the establishment of democratic systems, Gallup also asked adults across the 13 countries whether they believed the US will allow people in their region to fashion their own political future,” Gallup said. “Most surveyed were similarly skeptical.”

According to Gallup, 14 percent people in Afghanistan agreed the US is serious about improving the economic lot of people in this region while 67 percent others disagreed.

“The US has not been able to have significant influence on Afghanistan or implement a big project that can benefit the people for a long time,” said Bariz Atif, a student.

“The 20-year presence of the US in Afghanistan not only helped the development of Afghanistan but faced it (Afghanistan) with crises,” said Roeena, a student.

Many residents of Afghanistan also believe that the US has not been honest in implementation of these motives in various countries.

The political analysts gave various opinions on the topic:

“Such a survey can reflect the realities of the society. Such a survey should be conducted to clarify the general opinions of a country regarding the presence of the US troops and its allies,” said Farooq Alimi, a legal analyst.

“The presence of the US in Afghanistan was not aiming to establish these measures but it had regional and beyond-regional goals. And therefore, the people of Afghanistan have not been able to reach an enduring peace or have a government that all people can see themselves involved in,” said Jalaluddin Balkhi, a university instructor.

The survey was conducted in Iran, Turkey, Tunisia, Palestine, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Libya, Jordan, Kuwait and Morocco.
