Muttaqi Urges Pakistan to Release Afghans in Prisons

The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in a telephone call with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged the release of Afghan inmates prior to Eid-al Fitr, a spokesman said.

The Deputy spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, said that the two sides also discussed political and economic issues.

“The Afghans who are in various prisons of Pakistan should be released to spend Eid with their families,” he said.

The Islamic Emirate’s Consulate in Karachi, Abdul Jabar Takari, said that at least 50 Afghan inmates have been released from Pakistan’s prisons.

“The number of people who remained is 265, from whom 50 people were released due to our efforts and transferred to the country,” he said.

This comes as a video which is being circulated on social media shows Pakistani police beating two Afghan nationals.

However, TOLOnews cannot confirm the date of video.

“This is not the first time that Afghan refugees in Iran and Pakistan faced such humiliation. It has happened in various countries even Turkey and India,” said Nisar Ahmad Shirzai, a military veteran.

“The formation of positive, diplomatic relations is one of the main factors for improvement of the conditions of the refugees. The parties need to work on a proper plan to improve the situation of refugees and take practical steps in this regard,” said Asifa Stanikzai, a refugee rights’ activist.

Pakistan has so far released 2,220 from its prisons as a result of its negotiations with the Islamic Emirate, according to officials.

Those released include 221 women and 323 children.
