Sinirlioğlu Appointed Special Coordinator for UN's Afghanistan Assessment

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Feridun Sinirlioğlu of Türkiye to lead an independent assessment to provide recommendations for addressing challenges faced by Afghanistan, the office of the UN spokesman announced.

As "Special Coordinator," Sinirlioğlu will lead the assessment with a view to providing "recommendations for an integrated and coherent approach,” the statement reads.

The appointment of Sinirlioğlu was welcomed by the Islamic Emirate and also the former US special envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad.

“Anyone who comes should consider the realities. The stance of the UN is very important and it has some responsibilities towards Afghanistan and it should understand its responsibilities and help Afghanistan,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, Islamic Emirate’s spokesman.

Former US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad on Twitter welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Feridun Sirilinirlioglu and offered his recommendations including the establishment of a roadmap for international engagement with Afghanistan, the implementation of the Doha agreement and holding a meeting with the Islamic Emirate during the UN’s Doha meeting.

This comes as some political analysts said that the collection of reports about the situation from Afghanistan is important.

“The UN has not worked as it should to bring facilities, and regarding the recognition of Afghanistan, it has failed,” said Najibullah Jami, political analyst.

“This is a good step and the people also hope that the UN as an international organization through its global trust will help alleviate problems in Afghanistan,” said Najib Rahman Shamal, a political analyst.

Sinirlioğlu worked as the the Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations from 2016 to 2023, according to the office of the UN’s spokesman.
