UNHCR Official Visits Afghanistan

Gillian Triggs, UNHCR's Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, arrived in Kabul on Sunday afternoon and stressed the importance of the inclusion of female staff in aid delivery in Afghanistan.

Triggs is making her visit to Afghanistan days after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution that condemns the ban on female Afghan staff working at the UN agencies in the country.

“It is equally clear that we will be advocating with the government that they ensure that men and women are able to be part of the United Nations and UN refugees agencies team to ensure that protection is available and we will certainly be making that argument to the government over these next couple of days,” she told reporters in Kabul.

While welcoming Triggs at the airport, the acting Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Mohammad Arsla Kharotai, said that the international community should not politicize humanitarian assistance.

“The ongoing aid delivery should be distinct from political goals, and the humanitarian assistance should be continuing to Afghanistan unconditionally,” he said.

Kharoti also urged the international community to increase aid to Afghanistan.

“We call for an increase of humanitarian aid to help the people in need in Afghanistan,” Kharoti said.

Triggs is expected to visit several provinces including Bamiyan.
