Afghans Treated for Drug Addiction Relapsing, Say They Need Work

Some drug-addicted people in Kabul after treatment have returned to drugs. These addicted people said that if the Islamic Emirate does not provide them with the opportunity to work and does not stop the buying and selling of drugs in the country, it will be difficult to quit using drugs.

Mohammad Nayeem, 52, has three children, and it has been 30 years since he was addicted to drugs and he was treated but has returned to drug use.

"We can't leave this habit in 20 days ... if a person wants to leave this habit he can do it in one year," said Mohammad Nayeem.

"We ask the government, when they bring us for treatment ... doctors must be with us 24 hours," said Ali, a person addicted to drugs.

The Pul e Khishti is a part of Kabul's Dasht e Barchi area, where a number of addicts gathered under a bridge after treatment. nlNow these addicts say that the only way to get rid of their addiction is to have work.

"We are jobless, so we return to drugs and now we face challenges in our lives," said Ali Haidari, a person addicted to drugs.

"Unemployment is the reason that we are returning to drugs," said Ali Ahmadi, a person addicted to drugs.

Meanwhile, the counter-narcotics department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said that to treat more addicts and provide them with work they need the cooperation of the international community.

"Now we have addiction treatment centers in the zones. In order to activate these zones, we need special provision for work in logistics and other sectors," said Hasibullah Ahmadi, head of the counter-narcotics department of the Ministry of Interior.

"Smugglers and people who sell drugs to others--a strong operation is underway to suppress them. In the last three days, we have arrested 13 people in the city of Kabul in this regard," said Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the Kabul security chief.

According to the statistics of the Interior Ministry, 90,000 to 93,000 addicts have been treated across the country.

Based on the information of this ministry, more than 6,000 people have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking, buying, and selling in the country.
