Balochistan Minister: Dam on Kunar River Could Lead to Conflict

Balochistan’s caretaker Minister for Information, Jan Achakzai, warned that the decision of the Islamic Emirate to build a dam on the Kunar River will affect the escalation of tensions and possible conflicts.

He said that the Islamic Emirate's decision is unilateral and that this is a hostile act against Pakistan.

According to Achakzai, this dam will negatively affect Sindh's water.

“If the Afghan Taliban proceeds with this dam without involving Pakistan, it will have severe consequences, such as escalating tensions, and potential conflict," he added.

Previously, the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) said this dam on Kunar will have the capacity to produce 45 megawatts of electricity and will also be beneficial in the development of agriculture and the management of the country’s water.

“One of the big projects of the MoEW is the Gambiri dam project. This dam has the capacity to produce 45 megawatts of electricity and will irrigate 34,000 hectares of agricultural land, and it has been decided that this project will be completed by the private sector," said the spokesman of the Ministry of Energy and Water, Matiullah Abid.

Several experts said that the building of a dam on the Kunar River will not affect the amount of water of neighboring countries, especially Pakistan.

“The creation of a dam on the Kunar River is very important for Afghanistan in the management of water and energy,” said Najibullah Sadid, a water expert.

“No country has the right to forbid us from using legal water and the Afghanistan people have the right to create dams anywhere they wish,” said Azrakh Hafizi, an economist.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW), this dam will have the capacity to produce 45 megawatts of electricity in the future and will also irrigate 34,000 hectares of agricultural land.
