Iran Envoy Discusses Afghan Security Situation in Pakistan: Source

An Iranian delegation led by the country’s special envoy and ambassador for Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, visited Pakistan on Sunday, where he discussed the security situation of Afghanistan with Pakistani officials, a source said.

The source told TOLOnews that the “Iranian delegation includes 4 members who have an important role in policy making on Afghanistan.”

According to the sources, matters of “reservations about the use Afghan territory against their respective countries,” and that the Daesh Khorasan used a Tajikistan national in recent Kerman terrorist attacks in Iran will also be discussed between the two sides.

“He met with the security officials of Pakistan. The meeting was held in the Foreign Ministry, the envoys of Pakistan and Iran discussed the armed groups that exist in Afghanistan and which are a threat to both sides,” said Tahir Khan, a Pakistani journalist.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jelani on Monday met with Iran's Special Representative for Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, where Jelani ”underscored Pakistan’s commitment to a peaceful & stable Afghanistan and emphasized the need for enhanced coordination for regional stability,” Pakistan’s MoFA said in a statement.

“He [Jelani] also underlined the critical role of neighboring countries of Afghanistan to achieve the vision of a peaceful and stable region,” the statement said.

According to the statement Qomi also held talks with his counterpart, Pakistan's Special Representative on Afghanistan Asif Durrani, on the situation in Afghanistan and the regional processes for peace and dialogue.

“The contacts between the neighbors of Afghanistan existed in the past two-year but the change inside Afghanistan requires reforms in governance inside Afghanistan,” said Toreq Farhadi, a political analyst.

“Pakistan and Iran may want to prepare themselves for the general summit of the UN and these meetings could be initiative meetings for those meetings,” said Wahid Faqiri, international relations’ analyst.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry stressed the formation of a regional contact group to pave the way for solutions to Afghanistan’s problems.
