Roza Otunbayeva, the head of UNAMA, and Ali Bagheri, the deputy foreign minister of Iran, discussed the upcoming Doha meeting on Afghanistan.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry, quoting Roza Otunbayeva, in a statement wrote that the United Nations Secretary-General's special representative in Afghanistan emphasized the need to coordinate global stances to establish stability in Afghanistan and also called for Iran's engagement with the interim Afghan government.
According to the statement, Iran's political deputy in the foreign ministry also said that the United Nations' priority in Afghanistan should be securing the interests of the people and ensuring safety, peace, and stability in Afghanistan.
The statement added: "The United Nations representative also emphasized the need for coordination of regional and extra-regional countries' positions to aid Afghanistan's development and stability, and called for Iran's assistance in fostering constructive cooperation among them, and engaging with the interim Afghan government."
The statement, quoting the deputy foreign minister of Iran, wrote: "By comparing the situation in Afghanistan at the time of America's entry with the situation at the time of its departure, one can conclude that America's presence in Afghanistan significantly contributed to the spread of insecurity, instability, the increase of terrorism threats, and narcotics production."
The Islamic Emirate also demanded effective action from UNAMA to change the negative perception created by the United Nations about the interim government of Afghanistan.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews: “UNAMA should act as an intermediary between the United Nations and the people of Afghanistan, conveying the realities, achievements, and existing intentions to the UN, and collaborate in changing any negative intentions and discovering the truth."
"Every country has its own interests in mind, and until their perspectives align and they reach a unified opinion, the Islamic Emirate cannot reach the international stage,” said Zakiullah Mohammadi, a university scholar.
"The duty of the United Nations is to reduce wars or help create stability in countries, but from what we see, the UN has not done what was needed in Afghanistan over the past three years,” said Samiullah Ahmadzai, a political analyst.
Ali Bagheri, the deputy foreign minister of Iran, also called for creating opportunities for the return of educated Afghans to Afghanistan and utilizing their capacities in Afghanistan.
