Shaheen: Afghanistan's Seat at UN Should be Given to Islamic Emirate

Suhail Shaheen, head of the Islamic Emirate's political office in Qatar, has requested the United Nations hand over Afghanistan's seat to the representative of the Islamic Emirate following the suspension of Afghanistan's voting rights at the UN.

Shaheen attributed the issue with Afghanistan's voting rights at the UN to the seat not being held by a representative of the Islamic Emirate.

Speaking to TOLOnews, the head of the Islamic Emirate's political office in Qatar said: "The main reason for this problem is that the person occupying Afghanistan's seat at the United Nations neither represents the people of Afghanistan nor the current government. It is necessary for the UN to consider the realities and hand over Afghanistan's seat to the government of the Islamic Emirate."

However, Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Chargé d'Affaires of Afghanistan's Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that the issue regarding the suspension of Afghanistan's voting rights at the UN is technical, not political.

Additionally, some diplomatic sources told TOLOnews that Afghanistan owes the UN over $800,000 due to unpaid membership fees over the past four years, which has led to the suspension of its voting rights.

Samiullah Ahmadi, a political analyst, told TOLOnews: "Only the voting membership has been revoked, which legally is not a correct transaction, and this is a challenging issue for Afghanistan."

Mohammad Sangar Amirzada, an expert in international relations, stated: "Despite our internal differences and challenges in Afghanistan, maintaining Afghanistan's seat at the UN is essential and a national duty that must be preserved."

This issue comes as Afghanistan's seat at the UN has been a contentious topic over the past three years.

Afghanistan's UN membership fee is approximately $200,000 per year, which was previously paid by the foreign ministry of the former government.
