Afghans Released From Pakistani Prisons, Efforts Ongoing for More Releases

Abdul Jabbar Takhari, the consul of the Islamic Emirate in Karachi, Pakistan, said that 23 Afghan citizens, including one child, were released from Pakistan’s prisons and sent back to Afghanistan yesterday (Thursday).

Abdul Jabbar Takhari mentioned that currently 40 other Afghan citizens are imprisoned in Sindh province prisons in Pakistan, and efforts are underway to secure their release as well.

Takhari said: "Currently, we have more than 40 prisoners in Sindh prisons. Efforts are ongoing to release them so they can return to their homeland. Afghans here are living their lives peacefully and are not facing any problems."

Meanwhile, a number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan consider the challenges of obtaining visas as one of the main reasons for the imprisonment of Afghan migrants in the country.

"Refugees and migrants without residence documents in Pakistan have been arrested and prosecuted by the police, and they have been transferred to Adiala prison. Despite court orders for their deportation, they have been waiting for months for their deportation," Shafiqullah, an Afghan refugee in Pakistan, told TOLOnews.

Meanwhile, some migration activists said that to address the challenges of Afghan migrants in other countries, including Pakistan, the Islamic Emirate and supporting institutions should, based on international laws, ask these countries to treat Afghan migrants fairly.

"The current governments and the interim government of Afghanistan and international supporting institutions should, through diplomatic channels, provide social, political, and economic opportunities for migrants," said Mohammad Khan Mohammadzai, an activist for migrant rights.

According to the statistics provided by the Islamic Emirate, over 4,000 Afghans have been released from Pakistani prisons so far, including 230 women and 250 children.
