Ghalibaf: Closing Eastern Borders is Part of My Plans

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and one of the presidential candidates, said in a television interview that if he wins the election, he will close the eastern borders of his country to illegal immigrants.

Ghalibaf added in this interview that the expulsion of illegal individuals is also part of his plan.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament said: "Certainly, a complete budget has been allocated for our eastern borders, and the goal of the program is complete closure. It is also foreseen in this law that those who are illegally inside will definitely be expelled."

Meanwhile, some Afghan immigrants in Iran complain about increasing challenges and arrests in this country.

Non-renewal of visas and residence permits, restrictions on movement, arrests of legal immigrants, and lack of employment are the major challenges faced by Afghan immigrants.

"When this plan is implemented by the police forces, it does not matter whether the immigrant is legal or illegal and whether they have valid documents or not. As long as they are immigrants and from Afghanistan, they will be arrested," said Mohammad Hossain Kohi, an Afghan immigrant in Iran.

"If an Afghan immigrant encounters the Iranian police and shows their passport, either the passport is torn apart or they are deported with the same passport," said Akbar Sultani, another Afghan immigrant in Iran.

At the same time, some other Afghan immigrants who have been forcibly expelled from Iran talk about the limitations and challenges in the lives of Afghan immigrants.

"They did not treat us well. They harassed us; our children could not walk properly on the streets, could not bring bread from the bakery. If they were caught, they were beaten," Abdul Karim, a deported immigrant from Iran, told TOLOnews.

Iran's special representative for Afghanistan also recently announced in a press conference at the end of the regional contact group meeting that the fencing and closure of the Iran-Afghanistan border had begun. Hassan Kazemi Qomi also emphasized security cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan during this press conference.
