Over 20,000 Drug Addicts Collected, Treated in 3 Months: Officials

Officials from the Counter-Narcotics Directorate of the Ministry of Interior told TOLOnews that over the past three months, more than 20,000 drug addicts have been collected across the country.

Haseebullah Ahmadi, the head of the counter-narcotics office of the Ministry of Interior, said that out of these 20,000 individuals, 5,000 were collected from the capital, and the rest were from the provinces.

Ahmadi also mentioned the treatment of more than 2,000 drug addicts in the past three months.

The head of the counter-narcotics office of the Ministry of Interior, said: "Five thousand addicts have been collected from Kabul in the past three months, of which about 2,100 addicts have been handed over to their families after treatment."

Mohammad Khalid, who has been undergoing treatment for 40 days at one of the rehabilitation centers in a corner of the capital, said: "They took us from our homes and brought us to the Aghosh camp. Now it's been forty days that we are in this camp."

In this treatment center, religious sciences are also taught.

Some of the drug addicts at this center have said that they became addicted to drugs after migrating to neighboring countries.

"I couldn't use drugs in public like other addicts. I had to go through a lot of trouble and secretly ride a motorcycle to Charikar to obtain drugs so that no one would see me," Mir Fazlullah, an addict under treatment, told TOLOnews.

"My advice to young people is not to come into this addiction because their end will be like ours -- ruined. I don't know anything about my family, and we are stuck here with no clear future," said Ehsanullah, another addict under treatment.

Hekmatullah, the head of the Aghosh treatment center, said, "We have almost four, five, or six professions including shoe-making, bag-making, tailoring, and electrical engineering."

According to officials at this center, alongside teaching religious sciences to addicts, vocational training such as tailoring, shoe-making, bag-making, and electrical engineering are also provided.
