Pakistan’s Deputy PM and UNHCR Discuss Solutions for Afghan Refugees

Ishaq Dar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan, held a telephone conversation with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), regarding Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a declaration that both sides agreed on finding sustainable solutions for Afghan refugees in the country and continuing cooperation between Pakistan and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The declaration from the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads: "Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and the High Commissioner agreed to continue to work together to advance Pakistan-UNHCR cooperation and find lasting solution to the issue of Afghan refugees.”

Pakistani journalist Shahid Khan said: "There was discussion about further talks between the Foreign Minister and Mr. Grandi, and it is also possible that the attack on the Pakistani embassy in Germany was discussed."

Meanwhile, some Afghan refugees in Pakistan have reported that holders of "PoR" registration cards in the country are facing serious challenges and have called on Kabul and Islamabad to fundamentally resolve their issues.

Nazar Mohammad, an Afghan refugee in Pakistan, said: "Afghan refugees in Pakistan are still facing challenges and concerns. As happened yesterday in Germany, the attack on the embassy, following which the Pakistani Interior Minister said that the hospitality for Afghan refugees has ended and they should return to their country."

Previously, during his three-day visit to Pakistan, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees had also discussed the challenges faced by Afghan refugees with senior Pakistani officials.
