The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting at Iran's request.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, held Israel responsible for the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, while he was in Tehran.
Iravani also stated that the United States, in collusion with Israel, played a role in the attack on Ismail Haniyeh and that the attack would not have taken place without US assistance and approval.
Amir Saeid Iravani said: “This act of terror is just another manifestation of Israel's decades-long patterns of terrorism and sabotage targeting Palestinian and other supporters and sympathizers of the Palestinians across the region and beyond. ”
The representatives of the member countries of the Security Council in this meeting called for intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict in the Middle East.
Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said: "Major influential countries must exert more pressure and work more forcefully with the relevant parties, making sincere and substantial efforts to extinguish the flames of war in Gaza."
Barbara Woodward, the UK permanent representative to the United Nations, said in the meeting: "The path to peace must be through diplomatic negotiations. Long-term peace will not be secured by bombs and bullets."
Shino Mitsuko, deputy permanent representative of Japan to the United Nations, who was speaking at the Security Council meeting, said: "We fear the region is at the brink of all out war. The international community should make all diplomatic efforts to prevent this."
Meanwhile, the United States denied any involvement in the attack on Ismail Haniyeh and urged Security Council members to prevent direct influence on Iran from escalating proxy conflicts against Israel.
Robert Wood, alternate Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, said: "The United States was not aware of or involved in the apparent death of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh. Indeed, we have no independent confirmation as to Hamas' claims regarding his death."
The UN Security Council meeting was held after Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, was assassinated during his visit to Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Masoud Pezeshkian, the president of Iran, at his residence in Tehran.
