Sirus Amanollahi, a commander for the Iranian Army’s ground forces, has told the country's media that 330 kilometers of the border closure project on Iran's eastern border with Afghanistan will be completed by the end of this year.
During his visit to Iran's eastern border, Sirus Amanollahi added that the border closure project is being implemented to ensure security within Iran.
The commander for the Iranian Army’s ground forces added: "Given the increasing level of interactions between the two countries, Iran and Afghanistan, we are witnessing a day-by-day increase in security on the shared borders, which has been further enhanced by the presence of armed and security forces."
Meanwhile, Hamdullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews that implementing the border closure project with Afghanistan is Iran's right, and this project is being carried out with the agreement and coordination of the Islamic Emirate.
The deputy spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate said: "Iran’s desire to implement the border closure within its territory is its right, and they can take security measures to better secure their borders. The implementation of the border closure project is being done with the agreement and coordination of the Islamic Emirate."
"Any work done on the borders between Afghanistan and Iran must be based on an agreement between the governments of both countries. If there is no agreement, this act is one-sided and unacceptable to the people of Afghanistan," Yousuf Amin Zazai, a military affairs expert, told TOLOnews.
"Iran's border closure project can prevent drug trafficking and human trafficking, and it can have a positive impact on reducing other border challenges," Hanif Khan Karokhel, a political affairs expert, said.
According to this Iranian official, the border closures in Khorasan Razavi, South Khorasan, and Sistan and Baluchestan will be completed within the next three years.
Iran has allocated three billion dollars to its armed forces for the implementation of the border closure project.
