WSJ: US Still Grappling With Consequences of Afghan Withdrawal

The Wall Street Journal, citing a recent report from the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, has said that Washington is still dealing with the negative consequences of its withdrawal from Afghanistan.

According to the report, these negative consequences include the presence of seven American citizens detained by the Islamic Emirate and the situation of women in Afghanistan.

“They caused this situation themselves. If, during the Doha talks, we had always insisted that the political issue of Afghanistan must be resolved in some form first, then their withdrawal could have been organized in a way that would have been good for both them and the Afghans,” said Moeen Gul Samkanai, a political analyst.

The Wall Street Journal, in publishing a critical report and reviewing the 350-page report by the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that the Biden administration failed to plan for a potential evacuation of Americans. Biden's unwillingness to retain 2,500 troops meant abandoning Bagram Airbase with minimal security forces, which led to the chaotic evacuation from Kabul's civilian airport.

The Wall Street Journal report reads: “That nightmare resulted in 13 dead American service members from a suicide bomber. The report says ‘at least four Afghan civilians, including children’, fell to their deaths clinging to departing U.S. planes.”

"Trump said that we see Americans being killed by the Taliban every day, and we saw this in the media. This has a meaning; it indicates that a struggle was underway against a regional superpower present in Afghanistan. Also, when they were leaving, three days earlier at the airport, then known as Karzai, 13 members of their forces and 157 people were killed by Al-Qaeda," said Hadi Quraishi, a military analyst.

The report also said that Biden's team claims that Donald Trump left them with limited options by signing the withdrawal agreement in 2020. However, Biden showed no respect for Trump's other policies, and the "Taliban" broke their promises in Doha in any case, the report said.

The report also criticized the Islamic Emirate for not fulfilling the Doha agreements. While the Islamic Emirate has not commented on this matter, it had previously stated that it has fulfilled its commitments in Doha.
