Islamic Emirate Reiterates 'Commitment to Access to Information'

On the occasion of September 28, International Day for Universal Access to Information, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture stated in a program held for this event that the Islamic Emirate is committed to ensuring the right to access information.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture and the head of Access to Information of the ministry mentioned during this program that they are working to address the existing challenges regarding access to information.

Khobaib Ghufran, spokesperson for the Ministry of Information and Culture, said in this program: "There is an assurance from the Islamic Emirate that accurate, timely, and reliable information will reach you, provided that security stability is maintained and the mental stability of the nation is considered, as it is the system’s responsibility."

Rahmatullah Nariwal, head of Access to Information at the Ministry of Information and Culture, said: "We assure the media that while there are challenges, our efforts are aimed at removing these obstacles."

Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, also mentioned in this program that they are committed to providing timely information to the media and the country's citizens.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior added: "The provincial spokespersons have always been at your service. The Ministry of Interior has also held seminars for them, and we have seen positive changes, as they have had the best cooperation with the media."

Media support organizations and some journalists on this day called for more facilitation in accessing information.

Abdul Qadeem Wiyar, acting head of the Journalists' Safety Committee, said: "For an issue of this magnitude and importance, a single directorate cannot handle it. I emphasize that a commission, similar to the one we had before, should be re-established. It should maintain its independence and have the same structure."

At the same time, officials from some media outlets also highlighted the importance of timely and accurate access to information.

Zabihullah Sadaat, head of TOLOnews, said during the program: "Let’s address the issues that we still don’t have access to, or some matters that remain ambiguous. What kind of information should we and you have access to? What information should be shared with us and you? And what information should be shared with some delay? Because sharing raw or preliminary information often creates problems for both the media and government institutions."

On the other hand, some journalists also called for more facilitation in the field of journalism in the country.

Madina Akbari, one of the journalists, said: "Our request to the government is that they provide us with information on time. They should answer the questions we ask and provide us with the information we need."

Recognizing the importance of access to information, the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
