Helmand River Supplies 300 Million Cubic Meters of Water to Iran

Firouz Ghasemzadeh, spokesperson for Iran's Water Industry at the Ministry of Energy, announced that more than 300 million cubic meters of Iran's water rights from Afghanistan have been secured. He stated that the Afghan interim government has released water from the Helmand River to Iran between October 2023 and September 2024.

"Between October 2023 and the end of September 2024, 300 million cubic meters of water from the Helmand River were released toward Iran. Favorable rains in Afghanistan during late February and March contributed to this release," he said.

The Ministry of Energy and Water of Afghanistan reaffirmed its commitment to honoring Iran’s water rights, sharing that these details were communicated in their latest meeting with Iranian officials. Matiullah Abid, the ministry’s spokesperson, emphasized: "In the latest routine meeting of commissioners, the amount of water released this year was shared, and Iran's water rights have been fully met."

Water experts also weighed in on the matter. Aminullah Ehsas, a water expert, told TOLOnews: "In the absence of drought in Afghanistan, the water is normally released. However, due to climate change, according to the treaty, the Islamic Emirate can regulate the amount of water sent to Iran based on rainfall."

Nasser Shafiq, another expert, said: "If less water is being released to Iran, it's due to lower rainfall in Afghanistan, and under Article 5 of the treaty, Afghanistan has the right to regulate water flow based on its assessments."

Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the ambassador and special representative of Iran to Afghanistan, also confirmed that over 300 million cubic meters of Iran’s water rights had been secured this year as a result of negotiations with Afghanistan's interim government.
