Officials from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (Afghanistan's electricity company) have announced the collection of 195 million afghani in debt owed to the company by former government officials over the past three years.
Hikmatullah Maiwandi, the spokesperson for the company, said that the process of collecting these debts is still ongoing.
Maiwandi said: "Politicians and powerful figures who owed the Breshna Company have paid approximately 190 to 195 million afghani, and, God willing, this process will continue until all the debts are paid."
Meanwhile, residents of the capital expressed satisfaction with the collection of debts from former government officials, stating that the collected funds should be reinvested in the country.
These residents also called on Breshna officials to consider the economic challenges faced by citizens and work towards reducing electricity prices, as well as addressing the ongoing issues with power outages.
Abdulrahman, a resident of Kabul, told TOLOnews: "Our demand is that since there is little work and people are unemployed, it would be very helpful if the electricity fees were significantly reduced."
Haroon, another resident of Kabul, said: "Our request from the Islamic Emirate is to stop importing electricity from abroad. The money that has been deposited into Breshna’s account should be invested in Afghanistan’s power sector."
Mirois, also a Kabul resident, said: "The collected funds should be spent on building dams to prevent power outages during the upcoming winter."
At the same time, some economic experts have consistently emphasized that Breshna should use the collected debts to invest in energy production from various sources within the country.
