French police have announced the arrest of an Afghan citizen in southwestern France on charges of being connected to a planner of a terrorist attack and supporting ISIS.
According to international media reports, the suspect, along with another 27-year-old Afghan man, intended to organize a terrorist attack on the day of the US elections.
French media have added that he was linked to his 27-year-old brother, Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, who was arrested last week in Oklahoma, USA, on charges of planning a terrorist attack on the US elections on November 5th.
French authorities said that the suspect residing in the US was in contact via the Telegram network with Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, who has been identified by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as an ISIS recruiter.
"This is a significant blow to Afghan migrants, and other countries may be less willing to accept young Afghans as migrants," said Wahed Faqiri, an international relations expert.
The New York Post has also reported that, along with the increase in illegal migration to the US in recent years, the number of suspected terrorists arrested at the US-Mexico border has risen.
According to reports from the FBI, between 2021 and 2024, border guards have arrested 382 migrants whose names were on the U.S. terrorist watch list, whereas this number was only 11 between 2017 and 2020.
"The host country must act within the framework of international conventions," said Mohammad Khan Talebi, a migrant rights activist.
Swiss media outlets have recently reported that the country has expelled two Afghan migrants who were deemed serious criminals and a threat to Switzerland's peace and security.
Meanwhile, in June of this year, eight citizens of Tajikistan were also arrested on suspicion of links to ISIS in New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.
