Mohammad Yousuf Mestari, the acting head of the Prisons Administration of the Islamic Emirate, told TOLOnews that currently, nearly 150 foreigners are imprisoned in the country.
The acting head of the Prisons Administration said that among them, ten prisoners are Iranian citizens.
Mestari told TOLOnews: "We have close to 150 foreign prisoners. Naturally, most of them are from neighboring countries. Among them, there are eight to ten Iranian prisoners."
This comes as Iranian officials and the Islamic Emirate have recently held discussions about the transfer of Afghan prisoners from Iran.
Mohammad Yousuf Mestari reported that nearly 8,000 Afghans are currently imprisoned in Iran.
Regarding the rights of prisoners, he said: "All the rights that a human being has must be provided and restored to them there. More importantly, their cases should be addressed on time as stipulated by law. If these matters are not implemented, whether the prisoner is a foreigner or a national, their human rights are violated."
Based on available numbers, over 12,000 people are currently imprisoned in the country for various crimes.
