Suhail Shaheen Calls Decision on UN Seat a 'Betrayal' of Afghan People

Suhail Shaheen, head of the Islamic Emirate’s political office in Qatar, has criticized the decision by the United Nations to deny Afghanistan’s UN seat to the Islamic Emirate’s representative. Shaheen said the decision was a politically motivated injustice against the Afghan people.

“This decision reflects the indifference, injustice, and betrayal of the UN Credentials Committee towards Afghanistan’s 40 million people. We have consistently opposed such resolutions and will continue to raise our voices against them,” Shaheen declared, reiterating that the UN’s stance was unacceptable.

The UN General Assembly's Credentials Committee rejected the Islamic Emirate’s request to take over Afghanistan’s UN seat for the fourth consecutive time on November 20, deciding instead to uphold the current status. This decision comes more than three years after the Islamic Emirate regained control of Afghanistan.

Critical issues, including human rights and women's education, remain unresolved, continuing to strain relations between the caretaker government and the international community.

Aziz Maarij, a political analyst, highlighted the conditions set by the UN for granting the seat to the Islamic Emirate. “The UN has clearly outlined legitimate prerequisites, including ensuring human rights, restoring girls’ education, promoting women’s employment, drafting a constitution, and incorporating non-Taliban figures into governance. These steps must be addressed through legal processes and in alignment with the UN Charter and international principles. Only then can Afghanistan’s UN seat and voting rights be conferred,” he said.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s unpaid UN membership fees, which have exceeded $800,000 over the past four years, have led to the suspension of its voting rights.
