Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister, expressed hope during a conversation with Syria's foreign minister Asad Al-Shaybani that the Islamic Emirate and Syria could establish regular diplomatic relations.
According to deputy foreign ministry spokesperson Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal, Muttaqi congratulated Syria on their victory and praised the Syrian government’s policies on general amnesty and good governance.
Takal added that the Syrian foreign minister also expressed hope during the phone call for the expansion of relations between the two countries and for both sides’ delegations to hold meetings and discussions.
Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal stated: “Muttaqi Sahib praised the Syrian government’s position on amnesty and good governance following their victory and expressed hope that Afghanistan and Syria could establish regular diplomatic relations.”
Some analysts believe that continuing such dialogues could positively impact the Islamic Emirate’s relations with the international community.
Fazl Rahman Oria, a political analyst, said: “Both [countries] have systems that emerged from liberation wars. In the current circumstances, it is essential for Afghanistan and Syria to maintain friendly relations.”
The Islamic Emirate’s foreign ministry had previously issued a statement congratulating Hayat Tahrir al-Sham on the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and expressed hope that the power transition process in Syria would lead to the establishment of a government based on “the aspirations of the people and Islamic values.”
