Muttaqi Seeks Oman’s Cooperation in Reducing Afghan Prisoners’ Sentences

Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting foreign minister, in a meeting with Omani officials, requested the country’s cooperation in reducing the prison sentences of Afghan inmates and resolving consular challenges faced by Afghans residing in Oman.

The Minister of the Royal Office of Oman said that measures will be taken to provide pardon opportunities for Afghan prisoners.

Additionally, Muttaqi, in his meeting with Oman’s Minister of Industry and Trade, emphasized strengthening economic ties and launching direct flights between Afghanistan and Oman.

Zia Ahmad Takal, head of public relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated: "Apart from expanding exports and imports, the two sides exchanged views on food security, agricultural development, trade exchanges, and the transportation sector. It was also agreed that technical teams would initiate specialized discussions."

The Islamic Emirate’s Foreign Ministry reported that both sides agreed on facilitating business delegations' visits and enhancing cooperation between the private sectors of Kabul and Muscat.

Some analysts said that expanding economic and trade relations between Afghanistan and Oman will benefit both countries.

Mohammad Nabi Afghan, an economic analyst, stated: "Our trade relations with Oman are strong, and the Islamic Emirate should focus on specific key areas to enhance this cooperation. Oman needs a workforce, as construction activities continue in the country, creating job opportunities for Afghan youth. Additionally, a favorable environment for Afghan exports and goods is also emerging."

Abdul Shakoor Hadawal, another economic analyst, said: "These meetings will, God willing, be highly beneficial both economically and politically, as Oman has extensive experience in oil extraction and investment projects. Therefore, there is a possibility of agreements between the two countries in the mining sector."

Amir Khan Muttaqi arrived in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Sunday, and had previously met with Oman’s foreign minister.
