The National Workers' Union of Afghanistan resumed its activities today (Sunday, March 23).

Mohammad Zahid Ahmadzai, deputy minister of labor and social affairs, stressed support for workers in the country during the ceremony introducing the head of the union. He considered the resumption of the union’s activities beneficial for improving workers' conditions and called on all citizens to contribute to the country’s economic and social development.

The deputy minister said: “For the prosperity and development of Afghanistan, our shared home, let us all contribute to the dignity of this land.”

Abdulmatin Mawlawizada, the newly appointed head of the National Workers' Union, stated: “We must value workers and strive to ensure their rights in the country.”

Meanwhile, the International Labour Organization (ILO) also stressed its support for Afghan workers and described the Islamic Emirate’s efforts in the labor market as beneficial.

Tomas Stenstrom, acting head of the ILO office in Afghanistan, said: “ILO remains fully committed to supporting the country in this unit and stands ready to provide technical assistance, capacity building, and guidance to help foster a strong and independent labour movement.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Economy described the implementation of development and expansion projects as helpful in reducing unemployment, and called on labor-supporting organizations and the United Nations to support workers in the country.

Abdul Latif Nazari, deputy minister of economy, said: “One of the Islamic Emirate’s strategies and policies is to eliminate the problem of unemployment by prioritizing development and job creation programs.”

Younus Mohmand, first deputy of the Chamber of Commerce and Investment, stated: “The entire world operates on the efforts of workers. If we have skilled laborers, we can progress like developed countries that have advanced through their skilled workforce.”

Poverty and unemployment remain persistent challenges for Afghan citizens, who continue to call on authorities to provide employment opportunities.
