Iran has built a 55-kilometer wall along its shared border with Afghanistan to strengthen the security of its borders. According to Iranian media, this action is aimed at preventing drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Iranian officials have predicted that the border closure project will be completed within the next three years.
Iranian media, citing the governor of the city of Taybad, reported: “The closure and walling of the borders between Iran and Afghanistan is one of the most important active and strategic projects of the country, which is being constructed based on the latest scientific, technical, and fundamental findings by the engineering division of the Iranian Army Ground Force.”
Kamran Aman, a political affairs expert, said: “We hope that Iran will have diplomatic relations with us and will be able to maintain them. All land and air routes should be open so that we can travel freely.”
The expansion of the wall construction along the Afghanistan border comes as Iran has expressed concern over issues related to drug trafficking and the illegal migration of Afghan citizens to Iran.
Some military experts argue that border closure is the right of every country under international law, and that this wall construction could be effective in preventing drug trafficking and reducing the movement of illegal migrants.
Asadullah Nadeem, a military affairs expert, stated: “Iran, as a country, has the right to take certain security measures to ensure the safety of its borders, including the construction of walls or barriers.”
Zalmai Afghan-Yar, a military affairs expert, said: “If they are concerned about terrorism, they should engage in intelligence exchange and cooperation with Afghanistan in this regard.”
Earlier, Iranian officials had announced that the border closure project in the provinces of Khorasan Razavi, Khorasan South, and Sistan and Baluchestan would be completed within the next three years. Iran has allocated three billion dollars to its armed forces for the implementation of the border closure project.
