An elderly man in Khost province told TOLOnews that he is 140 years old, potentially making him one of the oldest people in the world.
Aqel Nazir, who seeks to have his age officially verified through documentation, said he was over 30 years old when Afghanistan gained independence from the British.
He is a resident of Sabari and Yaqubi districts in Khost province. While he cannot recall many events from his life, he remembers being over 30 during the reign of King Amanullah Khan and participating in the independence celebration.
Aqel Nazir told TOLOnews: "I was in the palace with King Amanullah Khan. I was over 30 at the time and I remember saying that the British had fled and knelt down. Everyone was happy and thanked King Amanullah Khan for chasing the British away. Many leaders accompanied us to the Arg (Presidential Palace), but now all of them have passed away."
Khyal Wazir, Aqel Nazir’s grandson, said: "I am 50 years old. He is my grandfather, and I am his grandson. This child is my grandchild. I even have an older grandchild than him."
Aqel Nazir’s family is requesting that his age be verified through legal documents.
Khyal Nazir, Aqel Nazir’s brother, said: "Our father's age is around 140, and I am 70. I have two sisters older than me."
Abdul Hakim Sabari, another grandson, stated: "We request the government confirm our grandfather's age using an ID or any other documents, to prove he is 140 years old."
Aqel Nazir’s family includes over 100 members, and even his grandchildren have grandchildren.
Mustaghfar Gurbaz, the spokesperson for the Khost governor, said a special technical team will be dispatched to verify his age. If confirmed, not only will he receive special healthcare, but efforts will be made to register his name in the world record books.
The spokesperson added: "We plan to send a technical team under the civil registration authority to determine the age of this elderly man, which may be 140. If confirmed by documents or assessments, we will work to register him as the oldest person in the world."
If verified, this man should be registered as the world's oldest living person under Afghanistan's name in the global record books.
