In Sayed Karam district of Paktia province, a 110-year-old feud between two families has been resolved through mediation by tribal elders and local officials, leading to reconciliation.
Tribal elders said that some disputes between families and tribes still exist in the province and should be resolved peacefully.
Nasir Ahmad Tayeb, the director of borders, tribes, and ethnic affairs of Paktia, told TOLOnews: "We are attending a ceremony for the resolution of a 110 or 120-year-old feud. Tribal elders, local officials, members of the dispute resolution committee, and even provincial-level representatives have come together, and this enmity has been turned into friendship."
The members of the reconciled families expressed happiness over the decision and called on others to resolve their disputes through tribal councils (jirgas).
Dawood, a resident of Sayed Karam district, said: "I urge everyone to put an end to their enmities."
Mohammad Ayoub, another resident of Sayed Karam, said: "Tribal elders, district officials, and anyone holding a position should work together to resolve such issues permanently."
Sayed al-Rahman, a tribal elder in Paktia, regarding the disputes, said: "We must be given full authority to advance and resolve such negotiations."
Officials said that 75 cases of disputes and feuds have been registered in Paktia, out of which 13 are currently in the process of resolution, and efforts are ongoing to address the remaining conflicts as well.
