The Kabul Municipality has taken a major step toward resolving the issue of street vendors in the busy Pul-e-Kheshti area by launching the construction of a modern underground market.
This project, which includes 340 shops and six entrances and exits, is expected to be completed soon.
Nematullah Barakzai, a representative of Kabul Municipality, said the aim of the project is to address the challenges of street vendors, promote urban development, and create job opportunities for citizens.
He said: “This market includes a total of 340 shops and covers an area of 7,280 square meters. It meets modern standards, with a fire safety system, solar panels, urban sanitation facilities, and all the features of a modern market. Kabul Municipality aims to address street vending issues through such underground markets while also creating employment for citizens.”
Wali Khan, the engineer in charge of the survey section of the Pul-e-Kheshti underground project, told TOLOnews: “This underground market has six pathways — two leading toward Sar-e-Chowk, two toward Pul-e-Kheshti, and two located in the middle. It is also equipped with an elevator for people who cannot use stairs.”
Residents of Kabul have praised the municipality for initiating this project, describing it as an effective step toward improving urban infrastructure.
Mohammad Khan, a Kabul resident, told TOLOnews: “Previously, carts blocked the streets, causing problems for people. Now, those who are financially capable can rent shops and run their business properly.”
Eid Mohammad, another resident of Kabul, said: “This market is located in a good area and is built according to modern standards. It is a convenience for the public.”
Construction work on the Pul-e-Kheshti underground market is over 90% complete and will soon be inaugurated.
