The brutal murder of Kobra Rezaei, an Afghan migrant in Tehran, has triggered widespread reactions.
The Embassy of the Islamic Emirate in Tehran, in a statement condemning the tragic incident, expressed condolences and sympathy to Kobra Rezaei’s family and called on Iranian authorities for swift and decisive action on the case.
The embassy emphasized that the matter has been raised with Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and urged the country's judicial and legal institutions to investigate and follow up on the case.
Women’s rights activist Tafsir Siahpush said: “An Afghan woman is murdered in another country like Iran. We hope this draws attention so the perpetrators can be brought to justice. Our demand from the Islamic Emirate and the Iranian government is to pursue this case seriously.”
Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Human Rights Defenders Committee issued a statement calling on Iranian officials to handle the case transparently and impartially, and to ensure that the perpetrators are punished according to the law.
A wave of reactions has also emerged on social media from Afghan and Iranian citizens, with many emphasizing that regardless of the victim’s race or nationality, justice must be served for Kobra Rezaei.
An Afghan migrant in Iran said: “My plea to the government of Afghanistan and the hospitable people of Iran is not to stay silent in the face of this crime. The next victim could be your sister or family member.”
An Iranian citizen said: “We hope the Iranian government reveals the details of this case, what the motive was, who the killer or killers were, what exactly happened and that it publicly punishes them.”
Some sources claim that Kobra Rezaei’s family and lawyer are under pressure from Iranian security forces not to share information about the crime with the media.
Legal experts have also warned that discriminatory treatment of cases involving Afghan migrants could damage public trust in Iran’s judicial system.
Legal expert Asif Faqiri said: “The violation of human and civil rights committed by Iranians against Afghans undermines Iran’s international standing. This is one of the few means of enforcement international law can rely on.”
According to reports, the remains of Kobra Rezaei’s body were discovered nearly 50 days after she went missing, inside the home of a 32-year-old Iranian man. Sources told media that efforts were made to destroy evidence of the murder using acid. The suspect is currently in Iranian police custody.
