Two months after signing the political agreement with President Ashraf Ghani, Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the High Council for National Reconciliation, has yet to complete the list of his picks for 50 percent of the cabinet, a share he got after signing the deal.
The Presidential Palace has completed the appointments in the cabinet for its part, according to presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.
“The remaining one or two organizations will be finalized within the next two days, but we are waiting for a list that will be shared by politicians who are with us,” Sediqqi said.
Sources close to Abdullah said a list of their nominees for ministries will be finalized by Abdullah and will be sent to the Presidential Palace in the near future. Abdullah’s office has not confirmed the finalization of the list.
“The list will be shared with the Presidential Palace today (Sunday); therefore, the cabinet will be announced tonight or tomorrow (Monday),” said Abdullah Qarloq, the deputy head of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan.
So far, President Ghani has appointed acting ministers for the ministries of finance, foreign affairs, mine and petroleum, education, women’s affairs, public health, urban development, and acting heads for the National Directorate of Security and the Central Bank.
Kabul residents called for the acceleration of the process, as they believe that it will be in the interest of the country and the current situation.
“They (political leaders) should pay attention to the ordinary people. We are in a difficult situation,” said Rukhsar Nazari, a Kabul resident.
“Current problems should be addressed,” said Amanullah Hotaki, a political affairs analyst.
