Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan-American pilot who landed in Kabul on Monday during an around-the-world solo flight, was honored by a number of MPs, senior government officials and local female pilots on Tuesday.
She was also bestowed the Ambassador of Peace title at an event organized by government.
The first deputy of the CEO, Mohammad Khan, called her a role model for women in Afghanistan.
“It needs courage when a young girl wants to fly around the world in a small plane which does not have resistance in windy conditions," Mohammad Khan said.
The women’s affairs minister Dilbar Nazari said Waiz’s journey was a huge achievement.
“With this move, Shaesta Waiz proved that women and girls can have big dreams and can fulfill them,” she said.
“Such trips are not easy. It needs hard work and lots of effort to make it happen,” said Mohammad Shah Habibi, head of Independent Civil Aviation Authority.
Waiz said her flight around the world is not only a record but added that it is aimed at developing hope among the young generation.
“Really this trip was about women, all the women in this room and around the world, it is for you. The flight was for you. You caused this to happen. All of you need a motivation,” she said.
Waiz started her solo flight two months ago. She has travelled to nine countries including Afghanistan.
India is her next destination.
