Afghan Commandos Chase Daesh In Nangarhar

The Afghan Commandos supported in an advising role by the US Special Forces conducted offensive operations against Daesh militants in Deh Bala district in Nangarhar which is believed to be a main stronghold of the insurgent group.

The operations began in late May, the Resolute Support said in a statement on Friday.

While in Deh Bala, the Afghan and US forces met with local villagers to discuss Daesh presence in the area. A village elder spoke of the atrocities Daesh had committed, forcing villagers to flee their homes, the statement added.

“We were forced out of our homes and forced to flee to other areas,” said a tribal elder in Deh Bala district. “They are like a cancer in the area.”

"This operation is a clear indication of the increased capabilities of not only the Afghan Commando force, but the Afghan security forces writ large," Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, Resolute Support and US Forces-Afghanistan spokesman, told TOLOnews on Friday. "It is also a step towards defeating the enemies of Afghanistan, and creating a lasting peace."

In the past six months, Daesh has twice been uprooted from its declared caliphates in Kot and Achin districts by Afghan Special Security Forces.

At the request of local elders, the statement said, Afghan Commandos began airstrikes to end Daesh control of villages in northern Deh Bala.

“The villagers support the Commandos and are eager to return to their homes,” said a US Special Forces advisor.

Almost 160 Daesh militants were killed in the operations, the statement said. Meanwhile, the Afghan forces have destroyed cave entrances, tunnels and structures, reducing Daesh safe havens.
