Ahmadi Released After 8 Years

Afghanistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release of Zaman Ahamdi, a writer, who was handed a 20-year prison sentence in 2012 for blasphemy.

“Acquittal from the court, the removal of the allegations. and my freedom were among my basic demands to the court,” said Ahmadi on Thursday in his residence in Kabul.

On December 3 last year, the Supreme Court of Afghanistan reversed a 20-year jail sentence for Ahmadi, however the court said at the time that their decision must be reviewed by the primary court.

“My family and I suffered the most; I was the only breadwinner of my family at the time,” added Ahmadi.

Meanwhile Ahmadi's family members have said that their social reputation was damaged following his detention over blasphemy.

“Who will answer the baseless allegations against my brother, and for the damage which was posed to the reputation of his children and family?" said Mahdi Ahmadi, Ahmadi’s brother.

“Justice was served to some extent in the view of the evidence and the documents related to the case,” said Ali Madad Hakimi, Ahmadi’s lawyer.

Ahmadi was arrested in the west of Kabul in 2012 after he wrote an article about the factors that led to the destruction of a Buddha statue in the central province of Bamiyan.
