Atmar States It’s Govt’s Job To Safeguard The Media

Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Tuesday condemned the attack on Shamshad TV station in Kabul and said government is responsible for protecting the media and its staff in the country.

“I strongly condemn the terrorist attack on Shamshad TV. It is an inhuman and atrocious act contrary to all Islamic values and norms,” Atmar wrote on his Twitter page.

Atmar assured the public that government will not allow the country's achievements over the past 16 years to fall victim to terrorist attacks. He said: “I appreciate brave ANDSF in eliminating attackers; assure journalists and press of Govt’s determination to take firm steps for their protection.”

Atmar said media freedom in Afghanistan is a model for all countries in the region and the world.

According to him, despite threats and pressure by terrorist and insurgent groups over the past sixteen years, journalists and the media along with the Afghan people and security forces have been victims in defending their sovereignty, territorial integrity and in protecting Islamic and national values of the country.

“Terrorists want to block and obstruct people’s voices and suppress press freedom which is the result of our people’s and Govt’s sacrifices in the last decade,” Atmar wrote.

This came after Daesh carried out an attack on Shamshad TV in the nation’s capital Kabul on Tuesday that left at least two people dead and 20 others wounded.
