Afghan Journalist Wounded in Armed Attack in Faryab

An Afghan journalist was Qutbuddin Kohi was wounded in an attack by unidentified armed men the city of Maimana in the northern province Faryab on Thursday evening. 

Kohi, who works as a journalist with the Pajhwok News Agency, was on the way to his home when he was attacked by unidentified armed men. 

“Three bullets were fired. I rushed and as I got back up and I was about to open the car’s door and I saw the gunmen fleeing in a white car,” Kohi explained the incident. 

Journalists’ rights organizations said the attacks are concerning and that four journalists and three media workers were killed in targeted attacks in the country in the last five months. 

“As a journalist, I call on officials to investigate the assassination attempt on Mr. Kohi,” said Alauddin Erkin, a journalist in Faryab. 

“We will not go back from our profession and we want to tell the enemies of the Afghan people that you cannot silence the voice of the people of Faryab by launching such attacks,” said Alogh Bek, head of Faryab Journalists’ Union. 

Faryab police said an investigation has started into the incident. 

“We have instructed all our security and intelligence agencies to immediately investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Faryab police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurish said. 

“Unfortunately, every year there has been a rise in the violence against journalists. The government is also not taking action to satisfy media workers and journalists about their safety,” said Mujib Khalwatgar, the head of NAI, an organization supporting open media in Afghanistan. 

Journalists killed in 2020: 

Safar Mohammad Atal, an anchor of Samson Radio in Helmand; 

Ahmad Khan Nawid, an anchor of Ghor Radio in Feroz oh city; 

Mir Wahid Shah Amiri, Khorshid TV reporter in Kabul; 

Shafiq Zabih, a cameraman at Khorshid TV; 

Elyas Daee, a Radio Azadi reporter in Helmand; 

Malala Maiwand, Eekas TV anchor in Nangarhar; 

Rahmatullah Nekzad, a freelance reporter in Ghazni; and Tahir Khan, a driver at Enekas TV in Nangarhar. 

On the first day of 2021, a reporter, Bismillah Adil Aimaq, was killed in an attack by unknown armed men in Ghor. He was head of a local radio station in the province. 

According to Reporters without Borders (RSF), 50 journalists were killed worldwide in 2020.
