Afghan Journalist Commits Suicide

The family of Haroon Niromand, an Afghan journalist, said the reporter hanged himself, and they said he was suffering from severe depression as well as pressure caused by the economic situation.

Niromand, 27, worked as a technical manager for the Meshrano Jirga TV Channel.

Niromand’s father, Nik Mohammad, said that his son was going to be engaged in the coming days.

“He had a lot of desires. We were preparing to make his engagement with his cousin but he left us in grave sorrow,” he said.

“When I woke up for the morning prayers, I saw Haroon was not in his bed. I went out and saw him hanged with my mother’s veil” said Abdul Khaliq, Niromand’s brother.

Niromand’s colleagues and friends say they admired him as a great talent and good soul.

“Haroon was a good and polite person. All of the colleagues had good memories of him. I can’t believe he died,” said Asif Sahar, a journalist.

The Meshrano Jirga TV channel stopped operating after the fall of the former government.

The media watchdogs reported earlier that over 150 media organization have halted their activities because of economic challenges and restrictions imposed on the media.
