Candidates Concerned About Non-biometric Votes

The Presidential Candidates Council warned on Friday that if non-biometric ballots are recognized as valid, the council will not accept the outcome of the presidential election.

Candidate Rahmatullah Nabil claimed that Ghani’s team is trying to organize marches to support non-biometric votes.

Nabil adds that Ashraf Ghani has met with some presidential candidates and has offered them government seats in exchange for their acceptance of non-biometric ballots.

“Recently they (Ghani’s team) began a series of moves to try to cheat, using money from legitimate or illegitimate sources, to speak to electoral groups and offer money or government seats in exchange for validating non-biometric votes,” said Nabil.

“Let me tell you in simple words, non-biometric votes are fraudulent votes with which they want to establish an illegitimate government and rule the people,” said Mohammad Shahab Hakimi, presidential candidate and member of the council.

Meanwhile, Ghani rejects Nabil's allegations and argues that the IEC should clarify how transparent or inaccurate the votes are that were registered in biometric devices.

“It is the duty of the Election Commission to clarify the transparency of the biometric and non-biometric votes and then make a decision, and we will respect the decision of the Election Commission,” said Najib Azad, a member of Ghani’s team.

Previously, the IEC has insisted that votes that are not registered in biometric devices will not be declared as clean votes.
