Car Bomb Targets Army Unit in Balkh, Four Dead

At least four people, including one security forces member, were killed on Tuesday in a car bomb explosion that targeted a compound of Afghan commandos in the northern province of Balkh.

A small truck loaded with explosives was detonated in Balkh district, almost 20 kilometers northwest of Mazar-e-Sharif city, the center of Balkh province.

Houses near the Afghan National Army’s commando unit headquarters were heavily damaged in the explosion and officials said that over 30 people were wounded, including six security force members.

The toll of civilian casualties is currently three dead and 24 wounded, officials said.

Earlier, sources at Abu Ali Sina Hospital in Balkh said they received three bodies and 26 wounded after the explosion.

In another report, the Afghan army’s 209 Shaheen Corps confirmed the death of one soldier and said six others were wounded in the explosion.

Balkh hosts a large government security presence--the 209 Shaheen Corps--which came under a complex attack in 2017. The attack left over 100 dead.

The Balkh unit attack comes amid the ongoing efforts of the Afghan government to start the intra-Afghan negotiations that have faced multiple delays over differences on the release of the Taliban’s high-value prisoners.
