Crimes in Kabul's 'Most Secure Areas' Alarm Residents

Two serious crimes occurred in otherwise 'secure' areas of Kabul on Saturday amid claims by the Ministry of Interior Affairs that criminal cases have been reduced compared to previous months.

One of the incidents happened in the north of Kabul in the Panjshad Family area in Kabul’s PD15, where a 36-year-old woman was killed in a gunfight between armed robbers.

“It is a shame for the government allows such an incident to happen at 2 pm in the afternoon in the daylight. The police chief (of PD15) has no respect for the residents because he should have visited the area himself,” said Faisal Hamidi, a relative of the woman.

“There is a symbolic response to such incidents… We call on the government, the Ministry of Interior Affairs and the Kabul police headquarters to ensure justice for the residents,” said Obaidullah Faizi, another relative of the woman.

Another incident happened on the same day in the Wazir Akbar Khan area in downtown, the most secure area in the city, when armed robbers stole money from a shopkeeper, according to eyewitnesses.

“Police are arresting dozens of robbers every day but they are released by the court,” claimed Abdul Wase, owner of the shop.

Security officials said crime level has reduced compared to the past.

“We have arrested at least 170 (alleged) criminals on charges of robbery, murder and other cases and their cases have been sent to the court. There is a serious commitment in fighting crime and criminals,” said Tariq Arian, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

This comes as the acting minister of interior affairs, Gen. Massoud Andarabi last week directed police to prevent the roaming of motorbikes in the city; otherwise, he will remove the police chief of the district where a crime incident happens by motorbike. His order came after a person was killed by a man riding a motorbike in the west of Kabul last week.
