Discord in Election Process Persists

While the Independent Election Commission (IEC) insists that the commission will announce the preliminary results of the elections once it completes the recount of votes in the seven remaining provinces, the Solidarity and Convergence team led by Abdullah Abdullah says that it will not accept the election result unless the IEC undertakes to recount of votes in the 27 provinces that it already completed without the presence of Abdullah’s observers.

“I want to inform our citizens that 27 provinces has been completed, the recount and investigations were there completed practically, the materials have returned, all procedures for it have been completed here, too, and we are waiting for the remaining seven provinces of which 4 have been completed. The legal procedures for the remaining three provinces will be completed soon,” said Esmatullah Mal, deputy head of the IEC.

The IEC has said that it will complete all technical work for the recount within the next four days.

“What the commission will decide about it, it is their own issue, what is related to us is that we will never accept the result unless the recount is carried out in 27 provinces in the presence of our observers,” said Mohammad Younus Nawandesh, a member of Abdullah team.

“The important thing is that the commission should undertake its decisions and work in line with the law and internal procedure and is should not allow anyone again to take the process hostage who tries to prevent the preliminary results again,” said Abdul Qader Hootkhel, an observer from the Ghani team.

The commission meanwhile said that the recount process has been completed in Panjshir, Jawzjan, Sar-e-Pul and Takhar provinces out of the seven provinces and that it will complete the process for three other provinces in the next two days.
