Discussions Ongoing Over New Cabinet: Abdullah’s Office

Consultations are ongoing about the appointment of new cabinet members, said Faraidoon Khowzon, a spokesman for Abdullah Abdullah, head of the High Council for National Reconciliation.

Under the political agreement between President Ashraf Ghani, 50 percent of the cabinet members will be introduced by the head of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Khowzon said.

However, the Presidential Palace has said that there is no longer a two-headed government in the country, but the administration (President Ghani) remains committed to the formation of an inclusive government.

“Discussions are moving forward over the appointment of the governors, deputy ministers, some of the independent institutions, members of the senate and some other related issues that were included in the political agreement, said Faraidoon Khowzon, a spokesman for Abdullah Abdullah.

“We are committed to the participation of all political layers in the government on the basis of a standard which is to serve the nation, not on the quota (power-sharing) that we have over the past five years,” said Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman to President Ashraf Ghani.

Sources speaking on condition of anonymity within the Sapidar Palace (Abdullah’s office) have said that Abdullah will not introduce his nominees to the Presidential Palace unless the fate of appointments in the independent directorates, provinces and the deputy ministries have cleared.

“The agreement that was signed in the presence of the country’s national leaders, each article of it should be implemented. If it is not implemented, of course there will be disagreements,” said political analyst Shahzada Massoud.

Nevertheless, ordinary Afghans have criticized the two officials over their failure to finalize the government’s cabinet as soon as possible.

“It is really shameful that the cabinet has not been formed so far,” said Sayed Abdul Wahid Saboori, a military expert.

“Everyone is thinking about their interests, not for the people, the people who offer sacrifices each day in the structure of the security forces,” said Mohammad Ibrahim Asim, a resident in Kabul.

This comes a day after Abdullah Abdulllah at the end of a four-day meeting titled "Strengthening Regional and International Consensus" said that his team is making progress on announcing the new cabinet, “which will be followed shortly with the presentation of the High Council for National Reconciliation members which will help and support the mandate of the negotiating team.”
