Do Not Hand Teachers to Turkey, Plead Families

Families of four teachers of the Afghan-Turk girls’ school in Kabul on Thursday raised deep concerns over what they described as unclear the fate of the teachers detained during a raid by the members of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) on Tuesday

On Wednesday Parents of Afghan-Turk school said the fate of the four teachers of Afghan-Turk girls school who have been held by the National Directorate of Security (NDS), is unknown.

Parents and families of these teachers said that all of the teachers detained by the security forces were innocent, calling on the Afghan government not to hand them to the Turkish authorities.

This comes at a time that Afghanistan and Turkey have not signed any agreement for the extradition of their citizens. Two of the school’s teachers are already under the protection of the UN.

The Afghan government so far have not made an official comment about the fate of the teachers and a Turkish restaurant owner.

Who are these teachers and what they do in Afghanistan?

Yilmaz Aytin, the coordinator of Afghan-Turk programs in Afghanistan for fourteen years. It is now more than 50 hours that his family have not heard of his fate. Yilmaz’s daughters Maryam and Ayesha were born in Afghanistan.

“We have not heard anything about him since he was detained. We were not allowed to hire a lawyer for him and no one knows of what he is accused of. If he is sent to Turkey, there will be no justice there, we call on the president and the people of Afghanistan to help us because we have served the people of Afghanistan over the past fourteen years,” said Yilmaz’s wife Amal.

Yilmaz 43 had also filed an asylum application in the UN office in Kabul.

“I request the president of Afghanistan to release my father, he is innocent and has done nothing wrong,” said Yilmaz’s daughter, Maryam.
Alongside Yilmaz, two more teachers, including one Afghan citizen Massoud Wardak, were also detained in the raid. The teachers were teaching physics and mathematics at the school. Wardak 30 has been teaching math over the past eleven years.

“The move would have a serious impact on the mind of all. They will feel insecure and will think that it will be their turn tomorrow,” said Fawad Haidari, deputy head of Afghan-Turk schools.

NDS officials have not made an official comment on the issue. However, a document seen by TOLOnews shows that a court in Turkey had ordered the arrest of these individuals.

What did the law say?

“When a person comes to a country as a political refugee, the host country has not the right to hand him to his native country,” said legal expert Wahid Farzayee.

The Turkish government reportedly asked the Afghan government to hand these individuals to Turkey, but there is no an official agreement between the two countries about the extradition of the people.

If the Afghan government defied the law and extradited these teachers to Turkey, it would an unprecedented move in the history of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan even refused to hand over the Nazi diplomats to the winners of Second World War.
