Education Has Deteriorated In Past Three Years: Survey

The Foundation of Justice on Tuesday said the state of education in the country had deteriorated significantly in the past three years and that insecurity and poor performance by the ministry of education were to blame for this.

This comes after the foundation carried out a survey and interviewed about 450 teachers, students and tribal elders around the country.

The survey mostly focused on the general state of education and closed schools.

According to the findings, in last three years, education in general hit its lowest – as compared to the last ten years. The foundation said there were two reasons for this. Firstly insecurity was to blame and secondly the ministry of education was at fault.

These findings also indicate that over the past three years, the Ministry of Education has lost many foreign donors due to poor management.

Of all those interviewed, 87 percent believed that education has been badly affected in the past three years because of the National Unity Government (NUG) and they said that previous achievements have been lost.

They also said that corruption and ethnic orientation in the ministry of education had reached its peak in recent years.

Ten percent of those interviewed said that the education situation in the past three years remains as it was.

However, 2.8 percent of the people said that the fight against corruption is being tackled seriously by the ministry of education, and that education is on the right track.

According to the survey, the condition of all schools, especially girls schools, has deteriorated in the past three years.

According to figures collected from various institutions over the past three years, nearly 2,000 girls have been poisoned in separate incidents in schools, the survey said.

The survey indicates that a lack of textbooks in schools is another major challenge that exists in the Afghan education system.

Findings of this survey shows that only 35 percent of school textbooks have been delivered this year.

The survey indicates that about 1,300 schools out of over 16,000 schools in Afghanistan have closed in three years. In 2014, only 380 schools had been closed.

The foundation stated that most of these 1,300 schools have been forcibly closed by anti-government groups – specifically in Kandahar, Zabul, Helmand, Nangarhar, Kunduz, Baghlan, Ghazni, Wardak, Logar and Nangarhar provinces.

But schools have also closed down in Paktika, Kunar, Nangarhar, Logar, Balkh, Kunduz, Wardak, Ghazni, Zabul, Uruzgan, Helmand and Kandahar due to poor performance on the part of the ministry.
