An explosion tore through the al-Zahra mosque in Dasht-e-Barchi in PD 13 in Kabul city shortly before 9pm on Thursday night.
Sources have said at least six people, including one policeman, were killed and more than ten wounded in the attack.
The explosion happened while people around the country were preparing to observe the Lailatul-Qadr (night of power) which is held on 19th, 21st and 23rd day of Ramadan and mosques on this occasion are very crowded.
The attack happened at a Shia ceremony.
Among those killed was prominent Kabul businessman Ramazan Husainzada, who was known as Haji Ramazan. According to a source, he was badly wounded in the attack and died in hospital from his injuries.
The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has confirmed that suicide attackers stormed the mosque, however there have been conflicting reports regarding the number of attackers.
Kabul police however said two attackers were involved.
According to a TOLOnews journalist close to the scene, security forces have cordoned off the area.
One suicide bomber reportedly detonated his explosives at the mosque while a second was shot by mosque security guards.
Eye witnesses report that a third attacker could also have been involved.
The Tablian has rejected any involvement in the attack.
